Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering and Community Service is an important way to set yourself apart on your ERAS application. Volunteering demonstrates a commitment to a cause, community engagement, and good time management. It's important that you explore volunteering during your pre-clinical years to show that you are a well-rounded, competitive applicant. Virtual volunteering can count on your ERAS application.

Volunteer opportunities are listed below, divided by campus:

 

Colorado Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado - various projects outside taking care of the community and nature 

Parker Parks and Recreation: Volunteer for Youth Programming, Wellness Events, and Parks and Outdoor space 

VolunteerMatch: Volunteer Match is a service dedicated to connecting organizations with capable volunteers. Many opportunities can be done remotely (e.g. social media management, email/administration).  

Ski and Snowboarding with Adaptive Recreation for Childhood Health: On Saturdays throughout the ski season, our participants and a team of volunteers from Adaptive Recreation for Childhood Health (ARCH) hit the slopes at Winter Park Resort. According to one mother, ARCH gives kids the chance “to do something fun for a whole day with their peers, rather than mom and dad hovering over them. 

ARCH | Children’s Hospital: Volunteers are always needed in a variety of roles to support and attend our recreational sports programs and fundraising efforts. 

Denver Parks and Recreation: Volunteer for Youth Programming, Wellness Events, and Parks and Outdoor space 

Project Send It: Project Send It wants to make rock climbing accessible to any child. Volunteer to help kids climbing days, event planning, fundraising, leadership, communication and social media. 

Joy’s Kitchen: Joy’s Kitchen is dedicated to rescuing and redistributing food waste in Colorado. Once approved as a volunteer, you can sign up for shifts whenever they fit your schedule.  

Project Worthmore: Project Worthmore was founded to provide programs that foster community, self-sufficiency and increase quality of life among Denver-area refugees. Volunteer to assist with English language classes, conversation activities, citizenship applications, or in their Food Share.  

Denver Rescue Mission: Preparing and serving meals, mentoring someone in our long-term programs, working with youth, helping sort donations in our warehouse, and more are all amazing things you can do volunteering at the Mission. 

Harm Reduction Action Center: HRAC is committed to serving People Who Inject Drugs to have access to care. Volunteer opportunities include syringe access, street outreach, neighborhood cleanup, syringe clean-up, special events, and social media advocacy.  

MAMCO Rescue: Colorado Rescue for Pregnant and Nursing Dogs. Volunteer to help with the dogs, walking, cleaning, and attending to their needs.  

Without Limits Triathlon Company: Volunteer to set up before races, during races, or do race tear down. If you are a triathlete, volunteering earns you discounted entries to events.  

Colorado Runner Events: Volunteer with one of Denver Metro Areas’ largest race association. All volunteers receive free entry into another event up to a half-marathon. If you volunteer for two events, you can earn free entry for Greenland 50k.  

Lend a Hand – Colorado Trail Foundation: You can help with our mission of maintaining the Trail through Trail Crews and the Adopt-A-Trail program, and there’s a long list of other non-trail work related volunteer opportunities.    

Colorado Fourtneers Initiative: Volunteers perform needed trail stewardship and education work to meet CFI’s preservation goals. The in-kind value of volunteer labor counts toward meeting CFI’s matching requirements for many grants. Volunteer for trail restoration, hiker education, and group projects. 

Big Brothers, Big Sisters - Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Colorado support children and strengthens the community. Volunteer to be a Big, helping with administrative work, being an events volunteer, setting up lunch and learns, or assisting with other tasks.  

Clean Trails - Take a hike and do some good. Register your hike cleanup results and become a part of Clean Trails. It's simple, take a hike (climb, beach walk, ride) and pick up at least one piece of litter. You can also become a cleanup ambassador by organizing a trail clean-up with your organization, adopting a trail, or simply going for a hike.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado: Volunteer alongside thousands of people to provide a volunteer workforce for recreation and habitat improvement projects in partnership with land agencies, nonprofits, and community groups.  

Ronald McDonald House: Ronald McDonald house is committed to ensuring that children have access to quality health care and their families are able to better comfort and support them while actively participating in their care. Volunteer as an individual or with a group for various tasks including administrative, family room, or pet therapy.  

Town of Parker Volunteer Opportunities: Learn about various volunteer opportunities within the city 

Anchor Center of Denver: Anchor Center for Blind Children provides early education and intervention services for children birth to five years old who are blind or visually impaired. 

Project C.U.R.E: Project C.U.R.E is focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases while working with victims of natural diasters. They need volunteer support for packing supplies, delivering supplies, or coordinating efforts. 

Children's Hospital of Colorado: Children's Hospital needs day-time volunteers and one-time volunteers to assist with day-to-day tasks, greeting patients, and more. 

The Action Center: A Non-profit located in Jefferson County, CO. Providing food, clothing, and support services to those in need and the homeless. 

National Sports Center for the Disabled: Volunteer with NSCD at Winter Park to assist skiers with adaptive recreation equipment as a lead instructor, assistant instructor, or support volunteer. 

Colorado RSVP Clinic:  Rehabilitation Services Volunteer Project (RSVP) is a community in which people with disabilities lead lives of maximum independence, inclusion, and meaning. Recognizing that rehabilitation can contribute to this outcome, our mission is to provide outpatient services and medical equipment to people who lack access to these services. This is a great opportunity for students interested in pursuing PM&R. 

Utah Volunteer Opportunities

Be My Eyes - this free app connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers for visual assistance through live video calls. As a volunteer, you'll answer requests from people who need help with anything from checking a food label or distinguishing colors to navigating a new area or reading instructions. 

Big Brothers, Big Sisters - 1 hour a week mentoring a child.

Children’s Justice Center - volunteer in a variety of ways (Join a committee to help out at one of our community events, help maintain our facility, provide office support, help with marketing/advertising for special events or public awareness, photograph events) to help children during abuse investigations. 

Clean a Trail - take a hike and pick up at least one piece of liter. 

Court Appointed Special Advocate - 1 hour a week, spending time with a child who’s experienced neglect or abuse. 

City of St George Volunteer Opportunities - various volunteer opportunities with the city (marathon, ironman, youth sports, etc.). 

DOVE Center - various volunteer opportunities (administrative support, shelter assistance, fundraising efforts, community events and outreach, prevention education, and direct client advocacy). 

Encircle - various volunteer opportunities with the LGBTQ+ community teaching individuals to love themselves. 

Girls on the Run - trained volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy. 

Habitat for Humanity - build or improve homes in the community. 

Humane Society of Utah - various volunteers opportunities including providing direct animal support, educating the community, providing support for staff, assisting in fundraising efforts, completing important projects, assisting in events, and much more!

Hurricane City Recreation - various volunteer opportunities. Some include helping with events (Easter Egg Hunt, 4th of July Celebration, Peach Days, Neon Night Run, and Christmas Tree Festival). They also have ongoing opportunities helping with fine arts productions, working in the Heritage Park Museum or coaching youth sports.

Intermountain Healthcare - various volunteer opportunities with the hospital. 

Junior Jazz - coaching basketball K-9th grade. 

Meals on Wheels - deliver meals to seniors who are unable to leave their homes. 

Piano teacher/player - play the piano or teach the seniors how to play. 

PAWS - Volunteer to work with animals in a variety of ways (cleaning, feeding, administration, grant writing, marketing, transportation, and more). 

Smithsonian Institiute Transcription Center - become a Smithsonian Digital Volunteer and help us make historical documents and biodiversity data more accessible. Collaboratively transcribe and review pages of field notes, diaries, ledgers, logbooks, currency proof sheets, photo albums, manuscripts, biodiversity specimen labels, and historic audio recordings.

Snow Canyon State Park - located just a few minutes from campus, the park needs volunteers for a variety of things (Campground hosts, maintenance workers, docents/naturalists, visitor center workers, trail stewards, fee collecting, etc.). 

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance - SUWA offers the opportunity for volunteers to join public land managers for hands-on work trips in various backcountry locations.

St George Musical Theatre - various opportunities to work in musical theater (perform, choreograph, provide musical direction, help with costumes, set design and construction, graphic arts skills, house management, ushers, and more). 

St George Senior Center - Various volunteer opportunities (from teaching a class, entertaining in the dining room during lunch, answering the phones at the front desk, etc.) if you have a special skill reach out to learn how you can share! 

Switchpoint - various opportunities to work with individuals and families experiencing homelessness. 

Trevor Project - as a crisis support volunteer you will work one on one with LGBTQ young people to help them navigate tough times. Requires a minimum 1-year commitment of 3 hours/week. This is a remote volunteer opportunity.

US Forest Service - typical volunteer projects range from a single-day project to a long-term undertaking for several months. There are many types of volunteer opportunities suitable for your talents and skills. Opportunities can include: leading volunteer projects, maintaining and hosting campgrounds, staffing visitor centers and ranger stations, monitoring wilderness, trail maintenance and building projects, or working with specialist on research.

Utah Food Bank - Projects may include sorting food donations, assembling food boxes, repackaging bulk food into family-sized amounts or labeling food for distribution. 

Volunteer Doctor’s Clinic - Various volunteer opportunities at a clinic (physician, advanced practice provider, RN, medical assistant, scribe, patient tech, or front-office coordinator).

Washington City Volunteer Opportunities -various volunteer opportunities with the city (youth sports, community clean up and events). 

Zion National Park - Volunteers staff visitor center desks, manage campgrounds, remove invasive plant species, patrol the backcountry and more. 

7 Cups Listener - provide 24/7 emotional support via online chat. 7 Cups wants to make sure nobody has to face their problems alone. Training provided!
