Description

This elective offers pre-clinical medical students a robust exploration of pain, integrating scientific understanding with practical therapeutic approaches and critical sociocultural insights. Unit 1: Pain Science lays the groundwork, examining the intricate neuroscience of pain pathways and introducing innovative concepts like Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Unit 2: Tools & Techniques for Pain provides an overview of diverse management strategies. Specific topics covered may vary with each iteration of the course. Potential sessions include a hands-on Dry-Needling Lab, OMT for Neuropathic Pain, the role of Nutrition for Pain, principles of Behavioral Change Counseling, Movement as Pain Therapy, and an introduction to Procedural Interventions (e.g., US-guided injections). Unit 3: Patients & Populations broadens the lens to focus on the patient experience, addressing crucial topics such as Racial Disparities & the Gender Pain Gap.
